her time in the volunteer sector, but
decided to work full-time.
"I love it [volunteering], and I still
do it, but it's a little here and a little
there. It was a natural to work for a
synagogue since I am a past president
[of Adat Shalom], and I've been
involved with synagogue life my entire
life. I've done a lot of the components
of the job of executive director," Cook
says.
Mark Goldsmith, Beth Shalom
president, and Rabbi David Nelson
are thrilled at the shul's new hire.
"Barbara will bring a wonderful
combination of efficiency and human
warmth to our office," Goldsmith
says. "I believe the entire life of our
synagogue will dramatically improve."
Nelson has known Cook from her
community involvement. "We are
truly fortunate she has joined us," he
says.
Beth Shalom is set to move in two
new directions. For one, it is putting
"a much greater emphasis on adult
education," Cook says. Secondly, with
the addition of a school wing, the syn-
agogue will launch a nursery school
next year.
"When I say adult education I real-
ly mean family education because
families are what synagogues are all
about," she says.
Cook has served on Adat Shalom's
cemetery board and the Jewish
Federation's board of governors.
Currently, she is associate chairman of
Federation's education budgeting divi-
sion and sits on the board of the
Michigan Israel Connection, where
she once chaired the scholarship corn-
mittee.
Cook has held board or officer
positions with Hillel Day School, the
Jewish Community Council, the
National Council of Jewish Women
Greater Detroit Section, Jewish
Federation Apartments, Michigan
State University Hillel and the nation-
al board of the Hebrew Immigrant
Aid Society. She is an attorney by
training.

Southfield City Council candidate
Euni Rose performed in the past with
Jerry Lee Lewis, the rock star, not
Jerry Lewis, the comedian as misstat-

Rose had 1,850 votes in Tuesday's
primary election and will face Sylvia
Jordan (1,367 votes) in the November
general election for a two-year term.
