SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Rabbi Yitzchak Aziel, from Yu-
goslavia, ate a kosher lunch at
the Manhattan headquarters
of the Orthodox Union this
week with 60 people, which is
more people than eat kosher in
his entire homeland.
Rabbi Aziel, who lives in his
native Belgrade, was a partici-
pant in the second annual
ASK-OU (Advanced Seminar
on Kashrut) program for con-
gregational rabbis from the
United States. And from
abroad. In addition to Rabbi
Aziel, the five dozen partici-
pants in the concurrent week-
long and three-week programs,
which began with a full day of
lectures and lunch, was to in-
clude Pinchus Goldschmidt,
chief rabbi of Moscow.
For Rabbi Aziel, one of two
rabbis serving Yugoslavia's
3,000-member Jewish commu-
nity, ASK-OU was a chance to
supplement the kaslu-ut educa-
tion he received in an Israeli
yeshiva.
He is a shochet, or ritual
slaughterer, as well as educa-
tor and cemetery supervisor in
Belgrade, his now-divided
country's capital.
In addition to him, "three or
four" other Jews, all young,
keep kosher in Yugoslavia, he
says. For most Yugoslav Jews,
the rabbi says, their only
chance to eat kosher food is at
holiday meals he hosts for the
Jewish community three times
a year at the Jewish Center
building. O
