bikes built for two; wobbly

cycles; as well as rollerbladers

Then, there are those head-
ed for the casinos. This is, after
all, the gaming capital of the
East. And the casinos — some
gaudy, some glitzy, several now
with themes like Bally's Wild
West — are a dominant part of
Atlantic City's image.
But, it offers far more than
gaming. From the new board-
walk skating rink to Lucy the
Elephant, a national historic
landmark further south on the
island, Atlantic City has varied
attractions.
For beach and nature lovers,
there's the whole stretch of
South Jersey shore, from At-
lantic City to Cape May, with
miles of beaches and seashore
towns with distinct identities,
such as quaint Stone Harbor
and Victorian Cape May. All are
less than an hour's drive from
the heart of Atlantic City.
Besides all this, Jewish trav-
elers are in luck when they vis-
it the area. Atlantic City and its
environs have a thriving Jew-
ish life, with a number of syna-
gogues, a modern Jewish
community center, and several
restaurants with ethnic or
kosher cuisine.
"For such a small communi-
ty, this is a remarkably active
one," says Rabbi Gordon Geller
of Temple Emeth Shalom. His
Reform congregation is head-
quartered in a spacious corner
building in Margate, a town just
a half-hour drive from Atlantic
City. (The small island actual-
ly includes four towns: Atlantic
City, Ventnor, Margate and
Longport.)
Outside the temple is a land-
scaped rock garden and abun-
dant plantings, with a sign that
reads, "Our Liberal Congrega-
tion Welcomes You." The tran-
quillity here seems worlds away
from the hubub of the casinos.
Inside, there's a sanctuary
seating 225 worshippers, with
six stained glass windows, and
an unusual antique window
crafted by a Jewish glassmak-
er in Italy.
Also on the island is Beth Ju-
dah, a Conservative congrega-
tion at 6725 Ventnor Avenue;
the Orthodox Rodef Shalom, in
a modern brick building at 4609
Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic
City; and a Jewish community
center at 501 North Jerome Av-
enue in Margate which serves
the entire island community, in-
cluding summer visitors and
residents.
As for Jewish appetites, they
can be satisfied in varied ways.
For casual deli fare, there's Lox,
Stock and Bagels at 6433 Vent-
nor Avenue. The cheerful, 40-
seat cafe serves breakfast and
