The Handleman Company's
third division, North Coast En-
tertainment, or NCE, acquires,
develops and creates music,
video and software products that
are proprietary brands.
NCE includes Anchor Bay En-
tertainment, which is one of the
largest independent video pro-
ducers in North America, pub-
lishing and distributing
children's, exercise, theatrical
and special interest videos.
Some of its best known brands
include "Thomas the Tank En-
gine & Friends," for which NCE
owns the rights for the U.S. and
Canada; "Crunch" exercise
videos seen on ESPN; the clas-
self-help seekers. Selections in-
clude MBA, math, Spanish,
French and other reference pro-
grams, all available on CD-ROM.
Pro One is one of their divisions.
NCE customers include Tar-
get, Blockbuster, Best Buy, Comp
USA, Musicland, Publishers
Clearing House, Sam's Wholesale
Club, Suncoast and others.
In the proprietary business,
said Strome, "we own our own
product. We own the licenses, or
the rights, or the total product
ourselves. That means that if
someone wants to buy one of
these products in the United
States or Canada, the only place
they can come for it is to North
Coast Entertainment or to Han-
dleman.
"Ultimately, when someone
buys 'Thomas,' they buy it
through us.
"In some cases, we'll even pro-
duce our own products. We rent-
ed or leased Andrew Lloyd
Webber's scores for a number of
his plays. What you do is go to
him and say, 'I want to use your
material and take it to an or-
chestra and have it performed.'
And you pay him a fee and a roy-
