merly part of the Rhinoceros pri-
vate parking lot ... enclosed with
seven or eight tables.
Fresh flowers are on all the ta-
bles and flags from various coun-
tries hang from the main dining
room rafters as mirrored balls re-
flect while turning.
Norman even has a picture of
his dog, Nikita, and the Ameri-
can Express card he got for her ...
(If Coco finds out, I'll have to get
one for him too, although I don't
think either of them will ever
have a need for it.)
The three rooms are all relax-
ing atmospheres, with colorful art
of local artists hanging on the
walls and for sale.
Rhinoceros has been a favorite
spot of celebrities when they came
to Detroit ... Rock Hudson, Don-
na Karan, Paloma Picasso, Har-
ry Connick Jr., Esther Rolle,
Nancy Wilson, Lily Tomlin, Tab
Hunter, Ginger Rogers, Freddy
Hubert, Iman, Joe Williams, Ste-
vie Wonder, Aretha Franklin,
casts of Cats, Joseph and West
Side Story, etc.

Rhinoceros:
A mainstay for
20 years.

While appearing here, Cloris
Leachman was at Rhinoceros
every night, sitting with the en-
tertainers and having scrambled
eggs.
As customers enter, a huge
poster from Ringling Bros. Bar-
num & Bailey Circus greets them
with the picture of a huge rhino in
`The World's Biggest Menagerie"
... It was auctioned off at Du-
Mouchelle's and bought for Nor-
man by staff members eight years
ago.
This sort of camaraderie is
evident daily and evening at Rhi-
noceros also among the cus-
tomers, many of whom call it
their special place to go for won-
derful food, service and enter-
taining enjoyment.
Celebrating its 20th year, Rhi-
noceros as another part of the
hopeful resurgence of downtown
Detroit is one of its best attention
compellers ... and draws.
ONLY TWO evenings for Bob
Anderson, songster and singing
impressionist of whom Tony Ben-
nett said, "Bob Anderson does
Tony Bennett better than I do
myself."
The former localite will be at
Andiamo Italia on 14 Mile, be-
tween Mound and Van Dyke,
tonight, Aug. 8, and tomorrow,
Aug. 9 ... $30 per person includes
two cocktails.
At Andiamo West on Tele-
graph and Maple, there's danc-
ing in the lower level every
Thursday evening ... to the '50s
Motown sounds of the six-piece
Thique band.

49TH ANNIVERSARY of
Mario's on Second has a rollback
of prices in its celebration ... Six
items Monday and Wednesday
include veal picante, $11.95;
chicken cacciatore, $10.50; six
more Tuesday and Thursday in-
clude filet, $12.95; veal marsala,
$11.95; and broiled whitefish,
$9.50 (broiled whitefish is also on
Friday and Saturday, which has
five more entrees like crab legs,
$11.50, etc.) ... dinners include
antipasto with salad bowl, mine-
strone or onion soup, pasta and
bread basket.
NAME REMAINS the same
Sweetwaters Bistro ... re-
opened on Cass Lake Road in
Keego Harbor ... but new owner-

Continental dining with a Eu-
ropean flair is the emphasis by

gene ... Open for dinner only.
DISH OF The Week ... Chick-

on Drake, just south of Walnut
Lake Road ... prepared mild,
medium or spicy ... Tasty pieces
of marinated chicken grilled in
the Tandoori oven.
SIXTH RESTAURANT by
Buddy's Pizza has been opened
on N. Squirrel Road in Auburn
Hills ... It is the former Amici's,
with seating for 125 plus outdoor
patio.
The new Buddy's Pizza Bar &
Grill is also its ninth locale ...
Restaurants are in Auburn Hills,
Farmington Hills, Livonia, Dear-
born, Warren and Detroit ... Car-
ry-outs are in Royal Oak,
Bloomfield and Detroit.
MARVIN KAHN, 80-year-old
jazz specialist, plays-his fine alto
clarinet every Tuesday evening
from 7 p.m. at Copper Creek
restaurant on W. 12 Mile be-
tween Halsted and Haggerty.
WORD IS THAT the former
Steve's Back Room and Sultan's
Table in Robins Nest Shopping
Center on Orchard Lake Road,
north of 14 Mile, may become an
Italian restaurant ... Still ethnic
but a big, new ownership switch
from Middle Eastern.
RECENT ZAGAT survey of
six cities rated Pizza Papalis Tav-
erna in Greektown the best piz-
za in Detroit Other cities listed
in the July 21 issue of Fortune
magazine were Boston, Chicago,
New York, Philadelphia and
Washington.
CHUCK MUER'S Seafood
Tavern on Orchard Lake Road
and Maple has a lot of seafood,
but also some items folks would
rarely associate with a sea farin'
operation ... Like bar-b-q beef
tips, Chinese chicken salad, bar-
b-q shrimp, and six pasta entrees
... All can be gotten at lunch or
dinner.

WONDERING DEPT. ...

Why is it that so many employ-
ees who handle food in restau-
rants still don't wear their hair
back or cover it with a netting
cap? ... I thought this was a
