THE JEWISH NEWS

hey are playful ghosts ...
Maybe Casper and his
friends ... And the funsters
make sure all customers
have left before doing any of their
shenanigans.
Norman Schwartz and some
members of his staff at Rhinoc-
eros on Riopelle, corner of
Franklin, in downtown Detroit,
say they have seen the frolicsome
antics in the wee hours of the
morning, about 3 or 4 a.m.
Perhaps the pendulum of an
unwound large clock on the Main
Room's back bar will suddenly be-
gin swaying as if the ghosts are
laughingly having fun on a swing.
Or maybe the classic chande-
lier in Norman's Rose Room (he
calls it that even though the walls
are green) will begin shaking as
though they are jumping from
crystal to crystal.
Thankfully, the ghosts never
get hungry at Rhinoceros, three
long blocks east of the Ren Cen
offJefferson and two short blocks
from the Chrysler Freeway.
They don't touch any of the
food, which leaves a lot of menu
items for customers to select from
its wide variety of dishes ... 12 ap-
petizers, three soups, nine salads,
six sandwiches, 20 entrees.
It was a shot-and-a-beer joint
when Norman took over in 1977,
and remained that while Rhi-
noceros was being renovated ...
Workers on Detroit River steam-
ers came for the hamburgers and
variety of sandwiches.
Today, its biggest seller is the
rack of lamb ... And when avail-
able, Rhinoceros always sells out
of the popular Cajun blackened
yellow fin tuna with seafood cake
and bearnaise sauce.
