The legendary bluesman Bo Diddley, pictured, was born Ellas
Bates in 1928 in Mississippi; his sister bought him a guitar when
he was 13. Acquiring the nickname "Bo Diddley" in the boxing
ring, he intended to earn a living as a carpenter and mechan-
ic; he ultimately drove audiences wild with what became known
as the "Bo Diddley Beat," acknowledged by his peers in 1996
when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the
Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Diddley performs two shows: 8
and 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. $22. Magic Bag, 22920 Wood-
ward, Ferndale. (248) 544-3030.
