West Bloomfield, died Aug. 4.
Mrs. Balan was a life member
of Temple Beth El, past board
member of Temple Beth El and
a past president of its sister-
hood; she also ran the gift shop
for many years. She was a
member of Women's American
ORT and Hadassah.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Jerry Balan; daughter
and son-in-law, Susan and Rab-
bi Scott Shpeen of Slingerlands,
N.Y.; son, Steven Balan of West
Bloomfield; grandchildren, Hi-

Greg Staples, noted violinist with the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra, is the featured artist in an outdoor concert at Temple
Israel's new Wasserman Pavilion, 7:00p.m. on Sunday, August
17, 1997.
Greg, son of former Detroit Symphony Orchestra concert-
master Gordon Staples, is a native Detroiter and a recipient of
an Artist Diploma in violin performance from Indiana
University.
Currently a member of the first violin section of the ASO,
Greg will perform V101111 classics accompanied by pianist James
Wilhelmsen.
This is the opening program in the Schmier Chapel
Chamber Series. If the weather is inclement, the concert will be
moved indoors.
