OAK AND CENTURY LODGE
I had a match per day," he said.
"All in all, it was a great trip and
great experience."
On the basketball court, Bill
Berris of West Bloomfield was
part of the U.S. masters basket-
ball team that won the silver
medal.
"It was a tough away game,"
the starting point guard said.
"We lost to Israel 78-74, and
there were two Israeli officials."
Berris, the oldest member of
the basketball team at 47 years
old, had won gold medals at the
1995 Pan American Maccabiah
in Buenos Aries, Argentina, and
the 1994 Central American Mac-
cabiah in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He
was part of the 1993 U.S. team
that won bronze in Israel.
Medaling in basketball's open
division was West Bloomfield's
Scott Zack. He was part of the
bronze medal winning team.
Indoors, bowler Philip
Horowitz of West Bloomfield was
part of the gold medal winning
team competition..
"Overall, I bowled below my
normal 215 average," he said.
"The alleys were different —
tougher then they are here."
The competition went on on a
somber note for Horowitz, who
prior to the games bowled and
became acquainted with one of
the Australians who died in the
collapse of the bridge.
"It put a lot in perspective,"
said Horowitz. 'There is more to
life than just meda 11 ng."
Horowitz said the United
States team, which lined up at
the opening ceremonies' parade
of athletes as "America," was
right behind the Australians,
ready to cross the bridge when it
collapsed.
"I'm not sure why [alphabeti-
cally] we were behind the Aus-
tralians," Horowitz said. ❑
