Several metro Detroit athletes brought
home medals from this year's Maccabiah
Games in Israel.

espite the opening day
tragedy of the collapse of
the bridge by Ramat-Gan

ow over the 15th Maccabiah
Games in Israel, the competition
continued and several local ath-
letes won medals.
Hockey, which was making its
Maccabiah debut, had several lo-
cal ties on the American team,
and a notable tie to the Canadi-
ans. The Americans lost in the
gold medal match to Canada, 6-
1.
"Other than Israel, we had the
only all-Jewish team," said Sam
Greenblatt of Southfield, the U.S.
director of player personnel. 'The
Canadian coach was Jacques De-
mers (former Detroit Red Wings
coach) and members of the
Toronto Maple Leafs and Mon-
treal Canadiens staff"
Mike Hartman of West Bloom-
field, who played with the Buf-
falo Sabres and won a Stanley
Cup with the New York Rangers,
was the player/coach of the silver
medal U.S. team.
Forwards Jerod Lutz and
Mike Nodler and goalkeeper Lee
Tushman are the other Michigan
players.
"I brought those guys along to
add character, even though they
don't play at that level," Hartman
