MANIC DEPRESSIVE ILLNES
THE EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER
Typical Symptoms of Manic Depressive Illness are:
regimented lifestyle is designed to
prolong his vitality - mentally,
physically and spiritually.
It was at the Master Yoga
Academy, in nearby La Jolla, that
the legendary physician practiced
yoga daily. Through videotapes,
he had been introduced to yoga
about six years before. This time,
though, it was supervised and in-
tense, supplemented by hands-on
therapy to relieve chronic spasms
in the lower spine.
"He could barely walk when he
came to us and his posture was
bent," Berch said. -
"He had developed a toe drop,
meaning that when he walked the
toe dangled on the ground."
Through Berch's yoga therapy
treatments, as she calls them, the
spasms disappeared. Spock was
able to stand fully upright after
three sessions. Now he does
lunges and stretches, displaying
the flexibility of someone less than ,
half his age.,
This is the same man who ex-
perienced heart abnormalities two
decades ago (a setback that
prompted him to embrace TM, a
discipline he now practices daily).
It's the same man who was told
by neurologists in 1991 at the New
England Medical Center that he
was unlikely he would ever walk
again because of nerve damage in
his legs.
The damage, which started
years ago after consuming conta-
minated red snapper while living
on a boat in the Virgin Islands,
had grown worse with age.
But Spock, an Olympic gold
medalist oarsman at age 21, found
the grim prognosis unacceptable.
At the suggestion of a friend, he
embraced a fat-free macrobiotic
diet that reduced his weight from
200 to 150 pounds in six weeks,
removing excess fluid from the
heart and lungs.
"Within two weeks, all the
symptoms went away," his wife
said. So did the wheelchair.
The Spock diet is 50 percent
grains, 30 percent vegetables and
the rest protein sources such as
fish, beans and tofu. Today, it is
liberally augmented by sesame,
olive, flaxseed and corn oil to ar-
rest any further weight loss.
Along with his recovery diet,
Spock has exercised as much as
he could: mainly yoga, rowing and
walking.
Recently, though, he experi-
enced another setback: a pneu-
monia condition stemming from
a swallowing problem that has
bothered him since he suffered a
mild stroke about a decade ago.
The pneumonia was short-
lived. Soon, Spock was hiking a
popular trail at Torrey Pines State
Park in San Diego.
"It offers the most gorgeous
view of the Southern California
coast you'll ever see,"his wife said
For Spock, 94 and holding his
own, it was the sort of thing that
makes life a daily adventure. ❑
