s steadily as the sun rises
each morning, the wispy vi-
sionary who revolutionized
baby and child care eases
into his ritual of rejuvenation.
For Dr. Benjamin Spock, it is
the difference between being in
a wheelchair and striding me-
thodically up a daunting trail on
the Southern California coast.
It's the difference between car-
rying the burden of his 94 years
on stooped shoulders and rising,
as surely as the temperature on a
summer day, to the height that
nature intended: 6 feet, 2 inches.
Spock has found youth in yoga.
He's found sustenance in a
meatless macrobiotic diet of nat-
ural foods and serenity in tran-
scendental meditation.
He's found that life in the 90s
is like, well, life in the '90s: full of
all kinds of new challenges.
"People still want to hear from
him," says Mary Morgan, his wife
and caretaker, who is 41 years his
junior. "He's writing three articles
right now, and wrote another new
book - 'A Better World for Our
Children' - a couple years ago."
At the moment, Spock is col-
laborating with San Diego pedia-
trician Martin Stein on a revision
of his landmark "Dr. Spocles Baby
and Child Care," originally pub-
lished a half-century ago. The up-
date is due for release in February
by Pocket Books.
