"It's a big investment," he said.
"You're probably not going to find
it on every street corner."
As a result, cosmetic dentists
are the primary purchasers, said
Jennifer Barney, a spokeswoman
for BriteSmile, the Salt Lake City
company that manufactures the
equipment.
Other dentists who are skep-
tical of new procedures are adopt-
ing a wait-and-see attitude. And
there are those who worry about
possible pulp damage to teeth
heated by lasers during the
whitening process. The pulp is the
soft tissue inside a tooth that con-
tains nerve tissue and blood ves-
sels.
Alder said this shouldn't be a
concern because the teeth are not
numbed during the treatment, so
patients could indicate if there was
any nerve pain or the laser was
too hot. We routinely drink or eat
foods at 140 degrees, he said. The
lasers only get to 120 degrees.
Even so, the American Dental
Association has yet to endorse the
procedure. It is true that laser
whitening is faster than standard
bleaching methods. What is not
known is if the new technique is
safer or less safe, said Kenneth
Burrell, director of the ADA Coun-
cil on Scientific Affairs
"It could be that it's all right,"
he said. "We don't know. I'm just
saying let's see the evidence of
this."
In a recent issue of the (begini-
tal) ADA News, (endital) the or-
ganization appealed to members
and manufacturers oflaser equip-
ment to provide information on
the safety oflaser whitening. The
fear is that lasers may be more
likely than heat lamps to damage
a tooth's pulp, Burrell explained.
"Sometimes when the pulp has
already been weakened by trau-
ma or decay, this little bit of irri-
tation from the bleaching process
could kill the pulp," Burrell said.
People who are seeking whiter
teeth should first consult their
dentist, Burrell recommended. A
thorough examination must be

.

done to make sure the patient is
a candidate for whitening. Then
a determination would be made
as to the best procedure to use.
As for over-the-counter whiten-
ers, including toothpastes, Burrell
advises consumers to steer clear
of them. They are not on the list
of ADA endorsed products.
Whitening toothpastes only get
rid of superficial stains that would
come off in a dental cleaning. And
the over-the-counter bleaching kits
can be harmful if used improper-
ly, he added.
"Consumers have to be very
careful about using those products
and the kinds of expectations they
have," Burrell said.
As for the woman who wouldn't
smile because of her yellow teeth,
she was Alder's second laser
whitening patient. After one laser
whitening session the woman's
teeth were brightened to normal.
"When she finished, she was
overwhelmed and she was in
tears." El

Sleep Linked
To Exercise

There's been plenty of anecdotal
evidence suggesting regular exer-
cise helps people sleep better and
lifts their mood, and now Harvard
Medical School researchers have
tested the theory.
According to a recent issue of
the journal (beginital) Sleep, (en-
dital) researchers studied 28 vol-
unteers age 60 and older; all
suffered from mild to severe de-
pression and none exercised reg-
ularly. About half the group was
assigned to follow a high-intensi-
ty weight-training program, which
got more difficult as the exercis-
ers got stronger. The remaining
volunteers attended twice-week-
ly health education seminars but
did not follow an exercise program.
At the end of 10 weeks, all par-
ticipants filled out a questionnaire,
self-rating the quality of their sleep
