THE FIT

SHOE THAT FIT

other kind. I've packed every-
thing but my pillow; and I ad-
mit that when I go to my
parents' home for a few weeks
this summer, bring that, too.
My Shabbat packing is even
worse. I have included the wine
I like for Kiddush, the specific
stubby candles I prefer and a
bag of challah rolls from our ex-
emplary local bakery (though
my friend is quite content with
hers). This is not to say that
Shabbat wouldn't survive dif-
ferent wine, candles and bread;
of course it would. But I find
that habit rears its head,
nonetheless; and so I pack a few
more idiosyncratic items and
try to quit analyzing every sock
(the thick ones with padded
heels, not those thin, ankle-high
jobs) and satchel (the light-
weight one with several exter-
nal pockets).
Alas, you would also think
that keeping kosher (which does
limit your choices) and keeping
Shabbat (which defines your ac-
tivities) would provide plenty of
parameters to someone with a
bent toward the particular, but
that turns out to be only the be-
ginning.
Here I thought I was devel-
oping a well-rounded, adaptable
personality; but my suitcase re-
veals that, instead, I am just a
bundle of pickiness, from big
things (my Siddur) to little ones
My lipstick).
I fear I shall have to re-think
my entire approach. I want to
be a free-er spirit. I want to
Nave it off when the hostess
hasn't got my brand of
Dhardonnay. I want to be able
to bound out of bed and leave
ror Hawaii on an hour's notice.
Just give me a try and I'll for-
get all about packing that one
Particular lipstick. After all, it
s hard to pretend to be adven-
turous and flexible when you
;an't leave town without Misty
Vlauve. ❑

They come in widths,
just like feet!

You don't have to
be a runner to get
shoes that offer
great support,
superior wear and
a good fit. If a shoe
can cushion, and
protect a foot in a
26 mile race, it
should be able to
get you through a
day on your feet!
