I like to think that I am a flex-
ible person: spontaneous, un-
burdened by habit, ready to
embark on new adventures on
a moment's notice.
I also like to think that some-
one, someday, will describe me
as "willowy" or "lithe," but that
isn't likely either.
In the process of packing for
a tiny two-night trip to visit an
ailing friend upstate, I find that
the days when I could grab a
toothbrush and a bandanna and
call myself packed are as far be-
hind me as the days when I
thought a flower - painted VW
van was the ultimate in trans-
portation, with or without hub-
caps.
I find I sweat the small stuff.
I want my specific toothpaste,
soap, orange juice and coffee—
not anything else.
I want the pink sweetener,
not the blue; the fat-free cream-
er, not the caloric brew; the
whole grain ce-
real, not the
flakes. Ap-

I've become as spoiled as the
only daughter in a family of
nine and as flexible as an IRS
auditor.
From my routine breakfast
crunchies to my favorite pop-
corn munchies, from my "one
heaping teaspoon" of coffee to
my particular kind of bedtime
herbal tea, I am discombobu -
lated by changes in my habits,
despite my latent self-image as
an adventurer. In this chaotic
world, can we find control in the
herbal tea of our choice? I don't
think so, but that's how my in-
ternal urges seem to feel.
My suitcase is my witness. I
am visiting a friend who is a
book and movie buff; but I have
packed the specific autobiogra•
phy I want to read, a movie I
know I want to watch, and a
book of my favorite crossword
puzzles, certain I will never
manage to fall asleep doing anY
