Families...
in 1775, was an adventurer who,
like Vincent van Gogh, had only
one ear. Unlike van Gogh, how-
ever, Mordechai did not cut off
his own. Mordechai's ear was
graciously removed for him by
the chief of the Coosawda Tribe
as a punishment for Mordechai's
relationship with a married
woman.
Mordechai was born in Penn-
sylvania, but he lived most of his
life among Native Americans,
whom he quickly became con-
vinced were descendants of the
Lost Tribes of Israel. According
to legend, he kept waiting for one
of them to speak Hebrew, but
amazingly enough this never
happened.
Mordechai was a man of many
curious habits, including the way
he ate. He had all his meals on a
coffin, in which he was later
buried.
When Mordechai died, yet an-
other odd event occurred. The
Daughters of the American Rev-
olution, no less, established a
memorial in his honor.
holding a rather curious honor:
The last photo of President Abra-
ham Lincoln was taken in his of-
fice. In his book, Solomons recalled
the experience was not easy, be-
cause the president bore "a trou-
bled expression." Five days later
Lincoln was dead.
(Incidentally, long before Ralph
Lauren and Albert Mizrachi you
could see a Jewish influence in the
world of fashion. Henry Dix, who
immigrated from Russia, designed
the first uniforms of the Red
Cross.)
With all the lawsuits aimed at
the tobacco company, it's amaz-
ing no one has brought up the
name of Luis de Torres yet.
De Ton-es was a close friend of
Christopher Columbus, one of the
first to set foot in the New World,
and the first white person known
to smoke tobacco.
De Torres was fluent in nu-
merous languages, including He-
brew, which he tried out on the
Native Americans (like Abraham
Mordechai, he was hopeful they
were one of the Ten Lost Tribes).

the Red Cross, that is. He was
born in 1826 in New York and
graduated from City College of
New York. Following graduation,
he worked first for a printer, then
for Secretary of State Daniel Web-
ster, who was never at a loss for
words to describe his talented em-
ployee.
Solomons served in the House
of Representatives and as chair-
man of the Ways and Means
Committee. He created numer-
ous social-service agencies and
was active in many humanitari-
an causes. One of these was help-
ing found the American Red
Cross in 1881. In fact, the first
meeting to discuss the creation
of the agency was held at his
house. Later, he and Clara Bar-
ton represented the United
States at Geneva, where the Red
Cross Treaty was signed.
Solomons also was famous for
They didn't speak any Hebrew,
of course, but the chief and his
men nonetheless invited De Tor-
res for a smoke. Later they gave
him land, where he built a home
and grew tobacco.
Before there was Hugh Hefn-
er, there was Arthur Letts Jr..
The son of the founder of Bul-
lock's department stores, Letts
in 1927 built a massive, if not
necessarily tasteful, home in Bev-
erly Hills. Made of English stone,
the 23-room manor includes a
Botticini marble entrance and a
pipe organ built into its incom-
parably thick (18") walls. The
home and its surrounding prop-
erty covers more than 6 acres. In
1971, Letts sold the place to
Hugh Heftier, who turned it into
Playboy Mansion West. It's lo-
cated at 10236 Charing Cross
Road, in case you're in the neigh-
borhood and want to stop in and
say hello. ❑
