AJPA Cites Buerger

Late publisher is cited, and his Jewish News staff
wins six Rockower Awards; Waterspout totals 19.

PHIL JACOBS EDITOR

C huck Buerger would have
been proud.
The late president of
Waterspout Communica-
tions, Inc., the parent company
of The Jewish News, was award-
ed posthumously the American
Jewish Press Association's
Joseph Polakoff Award. The
citation recognizes exemplary
service, integrity and distin-
guished career service in the
field of Jewish journalism.
Mr. Buerger died last No-
vember in Baltimore of compli-
cations during heart surgery.
His son, Andrew, a Waterspout
corporate vice president, and
wife, Ronnie, accepted the award
June 19 during ceremonies at
the Israeli Embassy in Wash-
ington, D.C.
Waterspout Inc. is an um-

azine.
Mr. Buerger undoubtedly

Polakoff Award. He, however,

Chuck than awards. Serving our
communities, that was Chuck's
best reward."
"As far as the 19 Rockower
Awards," continued Mr. Buerg-
er, "of course, they are a feather
in our cap. But our commitment
is to continue our link with our
communities, providing them
with the best in Jewish journal-
ism."

would have been even more
proud of the 19 awards his
publications earned during 1996.
A first place award
went to Baltimore
Jewish Times editor
Michael Davis for ex-
cellence in compre-
hensive coverage. His
package, "An Unfor-
gettable Presence,"
which ran through-
out Waterspout's
newspapers, chroni-
cled Mr. Buerger's
life and impact on
Jewish journalism.
"This was a diffi-
cult a way to receive
an award, posthu-
mously," said An-
drew Buerger. "You
want to be recognized
and appreciated in
your lifetime. Chuck
wouldn't have ac-
cepted this award
during his lifetime.
