Christian Coalition
Lineup Blasted
T
he announcement of a new
lineup at the Christian
Coalition prompted all the
usual responses from Jew-
ish organizations.
Jewish Democrats lustily
blasted the appointment of for-
mer Rep. Randy Tate as execu-
tive director and Donald Hodel,
a former energy and interior sec-
retary, as president.

support Israel, but holding back
on supporting American aid.
Mr. Tate, during his single
term in Congress, supported that
aid — but also voted for cuts
sponsored by Rep. James Trafi-
cant, D-Ohio, one of the most per-
sistent critics of Israel's $3.2
billion allotment. Still pro-Israel
lobbyists, always the pragma-
tists, were busy trying to put a
positive spin on Mr. Tate's selec-
tion.
The appointments "lift the veil
off the self-proclaimed nonparti-
sanship of the Christian Coali-
tion," said Steven Silberfarb,
associate director of the Nation-
al Jewish Democratic Council.
`They spend lots of time arguing
that they are not a partisan or:
ganization, but it's obvious their
nonpartisanship is a joke."
But Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein,
founder and president of the
International Fellowship of
Christians and Jews, said that
"I'm confident that the Christ-
ian Coalition will continue to
carry out policies and promote
views that are sensitive to Jew-
ish concerns, and that promote
Israel and its welfare and secu-
rity. The spirit of dialogue will
prevail."
During his term in Congress,
Mr. Tate pushed for legislation
making English the "official" lan-
guage of the United States, mea-
sures opposed by most Jewish
groups.
"It will be interesting to see
how the Christian Coalition rec-
onciles Tate's record on immi-
grants with its newly announced
attempts at 'racial reconcilia-
tion,"' said Carole Shields, pres-
ident of People for the American
Way.
.
Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein:
Positive outlook.
Mr. Tate will replace Ralph
Reed, who's leaving to form a po-
litical consulting firm; Mr. Hodel
will take the place of Christian
Coalition founder Pat Robertson,
who will become chairman of the
board. According to reports, Mr.
Robertson will play a less active
role in the political organization
as he focuses more on evange-
lization.
In recent weeks, the Christian
group has faced criticism from
the Religious Action Center of
Reform Judaism for claiming to
Peace Hangup
Hurts Investments
T
he ongoing crisis in the
Mideast peace talks is in-
creasing the risks for en-
trepreneurs who responded
to Mr. Clinton's call for serious
investment to reinforce the ne-
gotiations.
That was the message Omar
Salah, a Jordanian business-
man, brought to Washington re-
cently. Mr. Salah, whose
Century Group has led the way
in promoting joint ventures with
Israeli corporations, warned
that a collapse in the Israeli-
Palestinian peace process could
jeopardize many of the econom-
ic gains that are beginning to
have a positive impact on the
lives of Jordanians and Israelis
alike.
"Joint ventures have helped
Israel reduce export costs, and
they've helped Jordan create jobs
in areas where unemployment is
very high," Mr. Salah said in an
interview. "So both sides gain."
Jordan has the labor force will-
ing to work for moderate wages,
he said; Israel has the high-tech
know-how.
Mr. Salah came to Washing-
ton to push for favorable trade
arrangements that would allow
qualified industrial zones, oper-
ated through joint Israeli-Jor-
danian ventures, to export to the
United States without customs
