with the visiting Norwegian for-
eign minister, was quoted as say-
ing that Israel would have to take
steps if the Palestinian Authority
did not halt its policy of murder-
ing Arabs who sold land to Jews.
He did not specify what steps.
Israeli officials said Mr.
Bashiti, who had Israeli citizen-
ship, had apparently been lured
or forcibly taken to Ramallah.
One of the suspects whose re-
mand was extended was Nadia
Davash, a 33-year-old east
Jerusalem resident who alleged-
ly met Mr. Bashiti in an eastern
Jerusalem hotel hours before his
body was found in Ramallah.
The second suspect was iden-
tified as Yasser Anani, a Pales-
tinian police officer. The court
banned publication of details of
the investigation.
Mr. Bashiti's family was ex-
pected to bury his body near Nebi
Moussa, near Jericho.
His family encountered diffi-
culties finding a cemetery to bury
him after Palestinian Authority
clergymen in Jerusalem, citing a
fatwa, or religious ruling, de-
clared that Bashiti was an infidel
for selling land to Jews, and could
not be buried in a Muslim ceme-
tery.
The clergy barred him from be-
ing interred on the Mount of
Olives in Jerusalem. The family
later canceled plans to bury Mr.
Bashiti in the Muslim cemetery
in Jaffa, saying that they had
been threatened not to do so.

New York (JTA) — The Orthodox
rabbinical group that prompted
recent fury from just about every
other Jewish religious group in
the United States is now begin-
ning a campaign to bring Reform
and Conservative Jews into Or-
thodoxy.
The effort will involve staffing
the Lower East Side offices of the
Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the
United States and Canada with
volunteer rabbis who will respond
to the flurry of phone calls and
letters that the group says it has
received since last month, when
it declared the Reform and Con-
servative movements are "not Ju-
daism."
The rabbis will help direct peo-
ple to Orthodox synagogues and
rabbis for counseling, said Rab-
bi Hersh Ginsberg, director of
the organization, which claims
more than 500 members and
proudly describes itself as "right
wing."
The chancellor of the Conser-
vative movement's Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary, Rabbi Ismar
Schorsch, declined comment, say-
ing, "I don't want to demean my-
self' by responding to the plans
of a group as marginal as the
Union of Orthodox Rabbis.
