coming from a specific area of
the brain. This is termed focal
onset epilepsy and in some cas-
es surgical resection of the brain
is successful in controlling
seizures without doing further
injury or damage to the brain."
In Mr. Becker's case, the prob-
lem area is the left temporal lobe
and there is a chance he may be
a good candidate for surgery.
"Surgery for epilepsy," says
Dr. Spitzer, "can have a dra-
• matic impact in improving the
quality of his life and can be ef-
fective for other patients as well,
regardless of age."
The National Institute for
Neurological Disorders and
Stroke, a branch of the Nation-
al Institutes of Health, says im-
proved technology may make
2,000-5,000 additional patients
candidates for surgery each year.
/- Dr. Spitzer emphasizes the
importance of correct diagnosis.
"It's not unusual for a patient
to have one seizure, visit his
family physician who then per-
scribes an antiepileptic medica-
tion" for the rest of the patient's
life "when he doesn't have epi-
lepsy.
"Patients need to go to a spe-
• cialist — a neurologist — to be
thoroughly evaluated ... I have
had many patients yell and
scream at me because they
didn't want to hear the diagno-
sis of epilepsy. Yet accurate di-
agnosis has been greatly
facilitated by electromyography.
"I also encounter women who
have epilepsy and want to get
married and raise a family. They
• have lots of questions about the
/- disease and sometimes enter
counseling to help them decide
whether or not to have a baby.
My job is to educate patients as
well as I can so they can best
manage their epilepsy."
Unlocking the secrets of the
brain is one of the great research
frontiers of medicine. Research
in genetics and new medical
H technologies, such as imaging,
/- are allowing the medical profes-
sion to understand how the
brain works, to identify the
genes that may trigger disorders
and to discover ways of inter-
vening to cure them.

Dr. Ozdaglar has successfully
treated patients for over 20
years. You can be treated on
an out-patient basis and be
back to work the same day!
Our clinic is the original,
don't trust your legs to any-
one else!
