Certified Stones are a
Necessary and Priceless Asset

For the Bride

Is proud to present
the first midwest showing of

in the fast pace of phone calls, ar-
ticles, lesson plans and appoint-
ments.
When I come home, it takes a
while to adjust to the slower
speed. I race around the house,
wash dishes, clean, rifle through
the mail and do as many night-
time activities as possible before
dashing out again to a meeting.
My wife sometimes looks at me
like I'm crazy and will pointedly
tell me in great detail about some
minor episode of our daughter's
day, as if to say, "Stop. Focus on
here and now. Nothing else is tru-
ly that urgent." I try, believe me,
but too often the lesson is lost on
me.

Ours is a
generation torn
internally.

This is one reason why we are
commanded to rest on Shabbat.
Why do we need to be told to re-
lax? Isn't it obvious that people
need time away from work to
spend with family? Apparently
not. God understood the Type A
personality quite well when de-
manding that we leave work at
least once a week.
My father is an internist who
sees many elderly patients. He's
never heard any of them regret
not having spent more time at
work.
In the end, people regret being
absentee parents or detached
lovers, not underachievers in the
workplace.
Men seem to hac're more diffi-
culty internalizing this lesson
than do women. We worry that
people will see us "taking time
off' to be with our families and
question our professional com-
mitment.
Some people — such as teach-
ers and healers — are blessed
with careers that are truly mean-
ingful, where work is itself a re-
demptive act.
My heart goes out to friends
doing medical residencies
with insane hours as young chil-
dren call out for them at home.
No single answer will work
for us all, but it is essential to
identify, and keep, times to
nurture family relationships
and never let work become the
most important thing in our
lives.
When "Generation X" finally
settles down, we will discover
that professional success may ul-
timately be less satisfying than
family success.
We are obligated to sanctify
these lives we've been given and
all of the relationships therein. If
we can give our family the time
it deserves, we'll find our lives to
be more satisfying than if they
had been filled with the accolades
of professional success.
