Boom" Cannon, the Coasters and
Little Anthony and the Imperials
... introduced by Dick Clark, who
also answered some of the ques-
tions sent up to the stage ... He
did say that he was 67, but noth-
ing more ... Those who wanted to
know how he stays so young look-
ing never got an answer ... And
for sure the person who sent up
the one asking how many face
lifts he's had was ignored.
Those expecting answers to
these kinds of questions might
just as well have asked for a slice
of the moon.
The MCF 15th annual dinner
to benefit the Barbara Ann Kar-
manos Cancer Institute pulled
a record 1,400 people ... The
night's take recorded a whopping
$750,000.
"I never met a microphone I
didn't like," said David Hermelin,
last year's recipient, as he and
Mary Lou Zieve honored her
dad's memory with the third an-
nual Leonard N. Simons Award
going to Sam Frankel, who
couldn't attend because of illness
... Tommy Angott was the first to
receive the award.
The Wednesday prior, MCF
patrons swarmed the Bloomfield
Hills home of Ken and Marilyn
Wade, very gracious co-chairper-
sons of this year's event ... The
pre-gala they put on was one of
the most sumptuous yet ... And if
anyone left hungry, it was be-
cause they didn't go back for
thirds and fourths ... So much
food and so many desserts that
folks were given plastic contain-
ers to take them home.
THOSE GREAT lobster
nights are back through the end
of September at Joe Muer's Grill
on Southfield, south of 13 Mile,
and Joe Muer's Restaurant on
Gratiot ... They're every Tuesday
evening, with the one-pound lob-
ster, corn on the cob and potato
priced at $10.95 per person.

ham, wrote one of 16 poems

IT WAS WONDERFUL look-
ing around and seeing so many
chefs who have graduated from
the very fine culinary program at
Oakland Community College.
They had stations at the second
annual Great Lakes-Great Wine
Walk Around tasting recently held
at the Farmington Hills campus
on Orchard Lake Road.
The wines were judged before-
hand, so folks had a chance to gob-
ble up the double gold, gold, silver
and bronze winners after they had
been awarded medals.
And the food tasting furnished
by Morels, Golden Mushroom,
Five Lakes Grill, Pike Street,
Rocky's of Northville, Tribute, An-
diamo's Lakefront Bistro, Il
Centro, Mountain Jack's, Confec-
tionately Yours, Alban's and the
faculty of Oakland Community
College capped off an evening of
which OCC should be rightly
proud.
IF YOU CAN imagine local
commercial realtor, broker and de-
veloper Barry Klein as a former
flower child, you won't be shocked
by the paperback he has written
called Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll.
Chances are that you can't ... be-
cause folks just cannot picture
Barry as anything but a fine-look-
ing young man whose politeness,
graciousness and business sense
make him a chip off the block of
his late father, George Klein.
Barry makes no bones about
the "other life" he lived as a hippie
years back ... in a well-written ac-
count of those days.
His book is in memory of
George ... with royalties all pledged
to the George R. Klein Memorial
Scholarship endowment at Oak-
land University, which will award
annual scholarships in advanced
substance abuse guidance for post-
master's degree counseling candi-
dates.
It is dedicated to Shirley, "my
stenographer, research assistant,
typist, lover, friend, psychologist,
hairdresser, most loyal fan and
wife."
Barry's Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll
can be gotten at local bookstores
or by ordering direct from its pub-
lisher, Commonwealth Publica-
tions, (800) 491-7737.
