his first real job, but for introduc-
ing him to networking, which his
father used as a tool of the jour-
nalistic trade.
And networking is the gist of
what Dig Your Well is all about.
Networking, according to Mr.
Mackay, is "having a deep-down,
burning desire to meet every per-
son, to talk to everyone: the per-
son on your right, the person on
your left, the person in front of you,
the person behind you, the person
sitting next to you on an airplane.
"To be a successful networker,
you don't have to be a stereotype.
It isn't necessary to work the room
and be a slap-happy person,"
added Mr. Mackay.
Women appear to be better net-
workers because they "have more
sensitivity, and have more instant
credibility then men."
"When I was 21," he said, "my
father told me that 25 percentoof
my life was going to be dedicated
to volunteerism. Because that's all
he did. Most of his volunteerism
was helping people, and fighting
anti-Semitism. But of course he
was in a position to do it, as head
of the AP (bureau). Yet what he
said pushed me over the cliff.
"I've been chairman of the
American Cancer Society, the
Heart Fund, the United Way. For
43 straight years, one-fourth of my
life has been volunteerism. And
through it, I've become a leader,
an entrepreneur, a communicator,
a salesperson. Look what becom-
ing a volunteer can do for you."
Mr. Mackay's wife of 36 years,
Carol Ann, was the first Jewish
member of the Minnesota Junior
League. She sits on the board of
the prestigious Medill School of
Journalism. Harvey Mackay
broke some barriers on his own
when he became the first Jew-
ish member of the Minnesota
Athletic Club.
When Mr. Mackay was 26, he
bought an insolvent company
and turned it into the successful
entity that is today the Mackay
Envelope Corporation. Accord-
ing to a 1996 issue of Minnesota
Business magazine, Mackay En-
velope is a $60 million company
with 500 employees that pro-
duces more than 15 million en-
velopes every day. Mackay's best
customer for almost 40 years is
still the Fingerhut Corporation,
the mammoth direct-mail com-
pany.
Although CEO and chairman
of his firm, Mr. Mackay is a best-
selling author and much in de-
mand as a motivational speaker.
His fee is $30,000 for 60 minutes c
and he has averaged at least one
speech a week over the last 10
years, mainly to Fortune 500
companies.
"I spend 10 hours researching
every company I speak to," said
Mr. Mackay. "I get to know the top
management from CEO on down.
And after I make the speech, I
come back and ask for their enve-
lope business." ❑
