er Eyal Arad and two purported
members of the Political Direc-
torate, Knesset members
Michael Eitan and Hanan Po-
rat, also voiced regrets.
The film shows signature TV
news footage from that period
— demonstrators chanting "Ra-
bin is a traitor/murderer," and
then-opposition leaders Mr. Ne-
tanyahu, Ariel Sharon, Knesset
Member Rehavam Ze'evi and
others firing up the crowds.
The infamous photo distor-
tions of Mr. Rabin as an SS of-
ficer are shown, but so are the
heretofore unseen photomon-
tages of Mr. Rabin as a dog. The
camera pans across numerous
demonstrators leaping up and
down, shouting, "Death to Ra-
bin," and burning posters that
read, 'The Traitor," with a bulls-
eye over Mr. Rabin's face.
Asked about the film's con-
tention that the Political Direc-
torate, with Mr. Netanyahu's
participation, guided the activ-
ities of the Action Headquarters,
Mr. Netanyahu's spokesman
Shai Bazak said:
"Demonstrations in a democ-
ratic country are legitimate, but
they must not cross the line be-
tween legitimate protest and vi-
olence or incitement to violence.
The prime minister made this
clear, time and again, in the
months before the assassina-
tion.
"At many events he called on
the public to avoid expressions
or actions that could encourage
violence."
The film, however, never
shows this. It does show Mr. Ne-
tanyahu at a mass rally in
Jerusalem pausing in his speech
for a few moments as the shouts
of "Rabin is a traitor" grow ex-
tremely loud, then continuing
with his attack on the Rabin
government and Yassir Arafat.
Asked about this, Mr. Bazak
replied: "Many times he told
[protesters] to stop [such
chants], that this wasn't right.
Really, enough of this.
"The people showed in the
last election that they don't ac-
cept this attempt to incite
against Netanyahu, to silence
him," Mr. Bazak added. "Evi-
dently, some journalists still
haven't learned this."
In the film, Mr. Sharon, now
minister of infrastructure, is
quoted from an interview he
gave to the Orthodox newspaper
Hashavua as reportedly saying,
`The Rabin government is worse
than the Judenrat."
Mr. Sharon's spokesman,
Ra'anan Gissin, said Mr. Sharon
did not want to discuss the issue.
"The whole subject is painful for
him. Mr. Rabin was a close
friend of his," Mr. Gissin ex-
plained.
At a news conference after a
screening in Jerusalem, Mr.
Karpin said, "The facts I pre-
sented speak for themselves. I'm
a journalist, and my only goal
was to make a good documen-
tary."
However, executive producer
and financier David Mosevics
said he wanted to show that Mr.
Netanyahu, Mr. Hanegbi and
some other current leaders of the
government "bear moral and
public responsibility for the as-
sassination."
Clearly the film has a mes-
sage. "When the Action Head-
quarters ended its incitement
campaign, it put all of its efforts
into Binyamin Netanyahu's elec-
tion campaign," the narrator
says. The documentary shows
Action Headquarters members
putting up Netanyahu election
posters.
In the film, Geula Amir, Yigal
Amir's extremely religious moth-
er, says, "Gali [Yigal] was just
the messenger" of God's will. She
uses gematria, or Kabbalistic nu-
merology, to "prove" that a pas-
sage in the Book of Job foretells
the advent of "llamas, Islamic
Jihad, the left — Labor, Meretz,
Rabin." She says the passage
shows that Mr. Rabin "will die,
like this is his destiny."
Speaking from his jail cell, Yi-
gal Amir explains how he thinks
Mr. Netanyahu differs from Mr.
Rabin. "Look, it's a choice be-
tween blind disciples like Rabin
and 'cynical opportunists, you un-
derstand?" Mr. Amir says.
"Bibi is an opportunist. He can
still be molded, influenced. But
a blind disciple goes with his
head against the wall, into the
abyss." El
