Dear Dr. Ryan: I have trou-
ble spelling. Sometimes I
really get flipped out just
trying to spell a word.
Why is spelling so hard?
I would like to know the
best way to study spelling.
- Eddie

Dear Eddie: Spelling is the
use of letters to form words.
The implication is that the let-
ters are used according to cer-
tain rules.
Phonics plays a part in
spelling. However, there is a
problem. English has 40 ele-
mentary sounds but it is writ-
ten with 26 letters.
To understand how con-
fusing a total reliance on phon-
ics can be, consider the sound
ough. The sound changes in
words like bough, cough, thor-
ough,thought, through and
tough.
There are 14 different
spellings of the sh sound. For
instance anxious,mission, fuch-
sia and ocean.
Unlike Spanish, which is ba-
sically spelled as it sounds,
about one out of every four
English words is spelled differ-
ently than it sounds.
Try these ideas and see how
much you improve.
• Keep reading. The more
familiar you are with words,
the more easily they can be re-
called.
• Keep writing and
proofreading. The more you
use words and check your
work, the more you practice
correct spelling.
• Study with a friend Re-
search shows that peer group
work in spelling creates link-
ages between reading, writing
and spelling instruction. ❑
