netically predetermined eleva-
tions of LDL. Got a twin? If he or
she has heart disease, it increas-
es your risk of developing the dis-
ease by up to 80 percent.
According to Swift, just know-
ing your cholesterol count isn't
enough. "More than 80 percent
of people who suffer from heart
disease have cholesterol readings
within the same range as those
who do not develop heart disease,
so going beyond traditional cho-
lesterol testing may be our best
defense against the disease,"
Swift explains.
Swift believes a new test de-
veloped by his company, which
reveals a person's genetic risk fac-
tors, will give doctors a more ac-
curate assessment of a patient's
risk of developing heart disease.
This way, doctors can tailor a pa-
tient's treatment for maximum
effectiveness.

More Practice
Makes Perfect

Older workers can stay on top of
tasks with practice and a good
level of physical fitness.
Two studies in the current is-
sue of the American Psychologi-
cal Association's Journal of
Experimental Psychology-Gen-
eral compare the skills of
younger and older expert pi-
anists. Researchers found that
regular practice kept the older
musicians playing proficiently
despite age-related declines in
cognitive motor skills.
"We found that older experts
who maintained a sufficiently
high level of deliberate practice
throughout later adulthood did
not show the same age-related
decline in skilled music perfor-
mance that they showed in mea-
sures of general processing
speed," says Ralf Th. Krampe,
Ph.D. "Our results also show
that the role of deliberate prac-
tice in expert-level performance
is not just limited to learning this
skill early in life, as one my ex-
pect.
"Once an elite level of perfor-
mance is attained, it must be ac-
tively maintained," he adds.
A separate study published in
the APA's Psychology and Aging
shows the importance of staying
physically fit to stay sharp on the
job in later years. Researchers at
the University of London and the
University of Sheffield in Britain
compared the reaction times of
young and older postal workers.
The researchers also compared
the body mass, body fat, blood
pressure and lung function of
both groups, and found that
physically fit older workers re-
acted faster, maintained con-
centration for longer periods and
made fewer mistakes than their
less-fit peers and even younger
co-workers.
