The Thunderbirds wheelchair
basketball team won the Divi-
sion II national wheelchair
championship April 6 in Birm-
ingham, Ala.
The Thunderbirds are spon-
sored by Athletes Unlimited and
practice at the Maple-Drake Jew-
ish Community Center.
The Thunderbirds had to win
sectional and regional tourna-
ments to make the Final Four in
Birmingham. In their semi-final
game, they defeated the Austin,
Texas, River City Mavericks 67-
51.
In the championship game, the
Thunderbirds defeated the Pacif-
ic Spartans of California 63-50.
At half-time, the Thunderbirds
held a 27-26 lead over Pacific. Af-
ter the Thunderbirds' Kris Lenzo
picked up his fourth foul, Lou
Cherwak and Don Moore led an
11-4 run to push the lead to 48-41.
Pacific closed the margin to 54-50,
but the Thunderbirds scored the
last nine points of the game.
Erick Corsault, tournament
most valuable player, had 20
points for the Thunderbirds.
Mike Sprau and Jimmy
Ladouceur each had nine points
and five assists, and Glen
Ashlock had 17 rebounds. Coach
of the team is Dr. Jeff Pierce.

The B'nai B'rith Basketball
League completed its champi-
onship tournament on March 30.
In the "A" League, Pisgah de-
feated Barristers I 87-64 and
then beat Leadership I 72-56 to
win the championship. Leader-
ship I had defeated Detroit II in
the semis.
In "B", Downtown Fox II beat
Brotherhood V 60-48, and Broth-
erhood I beat Leadership II 49-
46. In the championship game,
Brotherhood I beat Downtown
Fox II 46-41.
In the "C" League, Pisgah III
beat Leadership IV, and Zager-
Stone beat Morgenthau I 51-50
in the semi-finals. Pisgah III beat
Zager-Stone 37-31 for the cham-
pionship.
The final regular season
standings had Pisgah and Lead-
ership I tied atop the "A" League
with 8-2 records, Detroit II and
Barristers I tied for third at 6-
4, followed by Detroit I at 2-8.
In "B" North, Leadership II
was 6-4,- Brotherhood II 4-6,
Leadership III 4-6, Brotherhood
VI 3-7. In "B" South, Brotherhood
I 8-2, Downtown Fox II 8-2,
Brotherhood V 6-4, Brotherhood
VII 2-8.
In "C" East, Zager-Stone 7-3,
Morgenthau II 6-4, Brotherhood
IV 4-6, Brotherhood III 2-8, Bar-
risters II 0-10. "C" West: Lead-
ership IV, Pisgah III and Mor-
genthau all were 7-3, Pisgah II
