formation is deceptive. She cal-
culates that due to holidays, the
monthly rate will translate to
$47.25 per day in September and
$61.56 per day in October.
"This [new rate] is a lot more."
said Ms. Brickner. "You have to
make at least $17,000 a year pre-
taxes just to pay for one child."
She noted that she is not the only
parent to put her children on the
wait lists of other programs. "At
/— one day-care place I called, they
told me I was the fourth JCC
family to call," she said.
"Th be honest, [with these new
rates] it doesn't pay for me to
work anymore," said one parent,
who asked that her name not be
used because "I don't want them
be angry with me if I don't get
my children into other programs."
Her name is on 10 different
wait lists. She is sad to leave the
JCC but is skeptical of the JCC's
motivations for the increase. "My
feeling on it is that because it's
the Jewish community, they feel
these people can afford it."
JCC staff attribute the anger
to a misunderstanding and are
confident that the program is
worth the price. They say the in-
crease is not as dramatic as par-
ents claim and is necessary to
maintain the current quality of
the program while reducing staff
turnover.
According to Child Develop-
ment Center Director Fredelle
Schneider, day-care profession-
als throughout the country are
notoriously underpaid, leading
to a difficulty in maintaining
quality staff. "We don't want to
compete for staff with Burger
King," she said, adding that tu-
ition increases will enable the
JCC to increase day-care staff
salaries and benefit packages.
A task force, made up of five
volunteers and three JCC ad-
ministrators, recently recom-
mended stepping up salaries and
requirements for day-care staff.
Although the task force did not
/—
recommend increasing tuition,
"Can you think of a better way to
pay for this?" asked program-
ming director Margo Weitzer.
Peri Kramer, a parent who
served on the task force, is not
happy with the increases but
agrees they are necessary.
"If you're trying to improve the
program, the money has to come
\_Th
from somewhere," she said.
/—'
Robert Goode is angered, not
just by the sudden increase but
by the attitude of JCC adminis-
trators. "I have nothing against
the program or the people in it,"
said the father of three. I'm up-
set with Margo Weitzer and [Ex-
ecutive Director] David Sorkin
because they didn't give us the
time of day." Mr. Goode and his
wife originally chose the JCC be-
cause it is close to their home,
and they were willing to pay a lit-
tle extra.
