From the President - Gail Stewart

1996 was brimming with activity, both around our office and in the community, and 1997 is already
shaping up to be even more exciting. Our staff is growing, our budget is expanding, and we held the
biggest fundraiser in Kadima's 12-year history.
Over 1,000 people filled Orchestra Hall in October to laugh with nationally-acclaimed comedian
Shecky Greene. We raised thousands of dollars, and achieved even greater recognition in the community
by letting metro Detroit know exactly who we are and what we stand for — providing Jewish residential
and support services for adults with mental illness.
"Support" takes many forms, including helping our clients maintain their independence. Currently,
Kadima owns or supports 11 residences (one kosher house, two condominiums and eight apartments),
serving 26 consumers. In 1996, generous patrons donated two new homes, and with funds awarded by the Michigan Stat
Authority we purchased two condominiums. We also helped a consumer purchase his own condo. Still, there's always more to do. At last count,
we needed space for at least 20 more people, and our waiting list continues to grow.
Kadima prides itself on creating housing situations to meet each client's needs. We don't provide generic residences — Some people require
24-hour supervision; others simply need a structured, supportive environment. Whatever the need, Kadima wants to meet it.
There's still a lot to do, but we couldn't have come this far without the day-in ; day-out commitment of our staff, board members and volunteers.
Thank you to everyone who keeps Kadima running smoothly. Our special events are successful, our support groups are well attended, and our
list of new consumers is increasing.
So here's to 1997. We look forward to working with both familiar faces and new ones throughout the year.

TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW

From the Executive Director - Janette Shallal

We say it every day, in print, in person and on the
telephone: "Kadima provides Jewish residential and
support services for adults with mental illness." But what
exactly does that mean?
It means we do whatever it takes to help the members
of our community who struggle with bipolar disorder (manic
depression) and schizophrenia to enjoy their lives as ful
our consumers need daily assistance, while others live and work independently.
Some live in Kadima's houses, condos and apartments. Others come into the
office for weekly appointments with social workers or just to say hello.
Kadima sponsors support groups for clients and their families. We provide
focus workers who help with transportation, living skills and daily support. We
work with Jewish Vocational Service and other organizations to help people find
and keep jobs.
Our clients are clerks and teachers, nurses and lawyers, parents and artists —
people just like everyone else, except that they have an illness.
One of the ways we get the word out about Kadima and mental illness in general
is through our annual educational conference. Last year's event focused on
schizophrenia and was attended by over 800 professionals and community
members. This year's conference, to be held in May, will explore bipolar disorder,
also known as manic depression.
A metro area psychologist recently called Kadima "one of the best-kept secrets
in Detroit." We don't want to be a secret. Tell everyone you know about us.

Introducing Sue Marx

Bio:

President and founder, Sue Marx Films, an
independent film company. Lives in Detroit with husband,
Stanley Marx.

Kadima Connection: Executive Director Janette Shallal

asked her for help producing a video. She graciously
donated her professional services, as did production
studio, Grace & Wild. The Kadima video, which premiered
during the 1996 fundraiser with Shecky Greene, was
produced by Ms. Marx and Assistant Producer Allyson
Rockwell. "I didn't realize how little I knew about adult
mental illness until we began working on this project," Marx said. "It was quite a
learning experience."

Kudos: Winner of many TV and film awards, including the 1987 Academy Award
for the documentary, "Young at Heart." Received a medal at the New York Film
Festival for an eight-part series for the Detroit Zoological Institute. Produced four
videos about the SMILE program for the Oakland County Friend of the Court. Co-
produced "Watermark," an award-winning documentary.

Reaction From an Anonymous Viewer After Watching the Kadima Video: "I
wish I had a million dollars to donate to Kadima — I'd write a check this minute!
What else can I do to help?"
