in May and gamely packed up
and moved to San Juan last sum-
mer, arriving July 10, one day af-
ter Hurricane Bertha struck.
Despite hurricanes — Bertha
was soon followed by Hortense —
and adjustments to a very big
move, Rabbi Friedman is thrilled
with her first rabbinic position.
"It's a wonderful shidduch,"
she says of the match between an
unusual congregation and an ea-
ger rabbi.
She was selected after a care-
ful screening process that includ-
ed a full weekend spent with the
congregation in April, after which
she was offered the position.
Because it meant a big move
— and the need to live tem-
porarily apart from her husband,
Stanley, an English teacher in
Westfield — she talked it over at
length with her husband and her
adult sons, Rami, 24, and Ilan,
21. "And the more we thought
about it, the more enthusiastic
we were," says Rabbi Friedman.
Her congregants are a diverse
group. One third are Puerto Ri-
cans who are married to "conti-

ust like many rabbinical
students, Susan Friedman
wanted her first rabbinical
assignment to be challeng-
ing and special. But she never
imagined just how unusual it
would be.
On January 31, Rabbi Fried-
man of Westfield, N.J., was in-
stalled as the first full-time rabbi
of a small Reform congregation
far from home — on a tropical is-
land in the Caribbean.
She's now rabbi of Temple
Beth Shalom in San Juan, Puer-
to Rico. It's one of only two Re-
form congregations in the
Caribbean, the other being in
nearby St. Thomas in the U.S.
Virgin Islands.
Meeting the rabbi and visiting
this small but flourishing con-
gregation was one highlight of a
recent trip to San Juan.
From earlier visits, I was al-
ready acquainted with Beth
Shalom and its dedicated con-
gregation. They had transformed
a former run-down bar, the Ninth
Inning Bar, into a simple but
beautiful sanctuary, where they
worship every Friday evening—
