irresistible
foot problems could be eliminat-
ed," says Farmington Hills podi-
atrist Dr. Chuck Young. "For
instance, when the warmer
weather arrives, there's a greater
chance to develop rashes, fungus
and warts. It's smart to remem-
ber, whatever the season, prop-
er trimming of toe nails so that
they follow the contour of the toe
helps to avoid ingrown toenails.
Taking care of blisters comes with
more activities and the warmer
weather usually causes feet to ex-
pand which means bunions, those
bony bumps on the side of the big
toe, are going to act up again."
Dr. Young, an avid tennis play-
er, says it's not easy to prevent
athlete's foot in the summer be-
cause it's usually contracted in
dressing rooms and locker rooms
where bare feet come in contact
with the fungus.
Daily washing and drying
carefully and changing shoes
and socks regularly to decrease
moisture helps prevent the fun-
gus from infecting the feet. Also
helpful is a good foot powder.
It may be a good idea to have
feet and ankles evaluated by a
foot care specialist before you
take to the courts, to the streets,
and to the bike paths. The bot-
tom line is to be careful and re-
sponsible because foot problems
can be prevented.
Warm weather usually
means more foot work and prop-
er care of the foot plays a ma-
jor role in keeping the entire
body fit to enjoy the sun and fun
this summer.

Preventing
Problems
• Wear well-fitted shoes with firm
soles and soft roomy uppers.
• Keep fit with regular exercise.
• Bathe feet regularly in luke-
warm water and wash them with
a mild soap. It is especially im-
portant to clean between the toes
and dry thoroughly.
• Help tender spots to heal by us-
ing over-the-counter pads and
cushions.
• Buy your new shoes in the af-
ternoon, after you've been on your
feet all day, so that the shoes will
fit when your feet are at their
biggest.
• Wear socks that keep your feet
dry, and change them frequently
if you perspire heavily.
• Don't cut corns and calluses
with a razor or other sharp in-
strument.
• Foot odor results from excessive
perspiration. Change shoes daily
and let each air out. Change socks.
Use foot powders and antiperspi-
rants and soak feet in vinegar and
water.
• Pace yourself in exercise and -
athletic activities. If your feet hurt,
take a break and find out why
they hurt.
If a problem continues, seek the
help of your podiatrist. 0
