SMALL AD- BIG VALUES.

their country, they will not lis-
ten. What we should do is visibly
and solely focus on funding tol-
erance and democracy projects
in Israel. Some of this is being
done, but is not enough. And we
should not expect immediate
changes.
During Mr. Netanyahu's re-
cent visit, some American Jew-
ish leaders were predictably
upset with the Israeli's noncom-
mittal response to their concerns.
The Reform movement issued a
press release that called its meet-
ing with Mr. Netanyahu "friend-
ly and respectful." They added
that "it did not make much
progress in addressing the grow-
ing split in the American Jewish
community."
I wasn't aware of Mr. Ne-
tanyahu's responsibility for fix-
ing this fissure, which is in no
danger of closing soon. As a
Jew, I hope he cares about
it, but it's our problem to deal
with.
By the way, there was anoth-
er false premise of the Reform
movement's statement. Reflect-
ing the semantics of other non-
Orthodox movements, it said
that non-Orthodox Jewish
groups represent 90 percent of
non-Israeli Jews. That's a nice
white lie. All movements have
enough problem keeping the in-
terest of people who occasional-
ly claim loyalty. But let's not
expropriate the roughly 50 per-
cent of Diaspora Jews who call
themselves "secular," "cultural"
or even "non-religious." They are
clueless and careless about le-
gitimacy battles.

American Jews
are again
wasting energy on
Israel's Jewish
disunity wars.

Let's face it. Mr. Netanyahu
has no shortage of crises. Our
concerns are at the bottom of his
list. If we want to enhance Jew-
ish unity (understanding that
we'll never have Jewish unifor-
mity), we must recognize mutu-
al failings.
While it takes one person to
not get along with another, when
both say they want to work to-
gether, they are obligated to try.
And try again. And then try some
more. And refuse to give up.
That doesn't happen in Israel,
in Detroit or elsewhere in the
Jewish world. In fact, we tend to
dwell more on why we don't get
along rather than seek ways to
agree.
Meanwhile, Binyamin Ne-
tanyahu will keep doing what he
was elected to do — be a politi-
cian, not an arbiter of "authentic
Judaism." 0
