Israel Prime Minister Binyamin
Netanyahu is turning out to be a
much better politician than many
American Jews would like. And
that has nothing to do with how
his government conducts the
peace process.
Rather, it's about how he con-
tinually and deftly dodges the
most controversial issue of the
Diaspora-Israel relationship: the
legitimacy of non-Orthodox Ju-
daism.
Consider his recent visit to the
United States. Mr. Netanyahu
sought the requisite meetings
with top American Jewish lead-
ers. (I heard the cookies were
great.) That meant two separate
gatherings in New York City —
one for Conservative and Reform
movement honchos, the other for
Orthodox bigwigs.
But when it came to symbol-
ism, Mr. Netanyahu made his po-
litical loyalties — not religious
ones — clear. On Saturday morn-
ing, he made the eight-block
stroll from the Essex House ho-
tel to the Fifth Avenue Syna-
gogue, which is Orthodox.
(We know that Mr. Netanyahu
and his entourage understand
the subtle nature of modern
American Jewish life because
they arrived at 10:40 a.m. which
is fashionably late.)
Mr. Netanyahu did not choose
an Orthodox congregation be-
cause he lives, says he lives or
even wants to live the tenets of
Orthodox Judaism. And his vis-
it to the Fifth Avenue Syna-
gogue had nothing to do with
whether he thinks Orthodox Ju-
daism is "authentic," whatever
that means. Rather, it was be-
cause to do otherwise would
have upset his always-ready-to-
teeter coalition, which is an-
chored by Israel's Orthodox
religious parties.
And that, my friends, is un-
derstandably far more important
to Mr. Netanyahu than the emo-
tional response of American
Jews, roughly zero of whom vote
in Israel. And while many of us
will keep pressing Israel's lead-
ers to democratize Judaism in
