Accused Soldier
Still In Custody

Jerusalem (JTA) — The Israeli
military court in Jaffa has ex-
tended the detention of Noam
Friedman, the Israel Defense
Force soldier accused of firing on
Palestinian shoppers in Hebron.
The incident, in which seven
people were wounded, occurred
shortly before the signing of the
Israeli-Palestinian accords on the
West Bank town.
The psychiatric evaluation to
determine whether Friedman is
fit for trial is continuing.
Meanwhile, Jewish settlers
and Palestinians threw eggs and
tomatoes at each other in a dis-
pute over the reopening of an
Arab vegetable market in He-
bron. Israeli soldiers intervened.
The market adjacent to the
Avraham Avinu settler complex
in downtown Hebron was shut
down after the 1994 massacre of
29 Palestinian worshipers by a
Jewish settler.
