Miss Manners
deplores giving
money.
Some best sellers are
clocks, picture frames, sta-
tionery, and pens. "Most cus-
tomers tend to stay under $25
for business gifts," she says.
Before the winter holidays,
one boss bought nine clocks,
each slightly different, for her
co-workers. A $15 pen, a per-
fect Mont Blanc knockoff,
was another big seller. "I think
every school teacher in this
area must have received one,"
Nathanson says.
The co-owners don't carry
many items that are sized,
and they encourage people to
spend time wandering
through the store before they
buy.
Still, today's g ift giver tends
to want some moral support
and encouragement. "They
always want to talk things
over before they make that
final choice," Nathanson
notes. 0

Acknowledging the shift in
priorities and relationships in
the 1990s, many of the items
at Giftpeople are appropriate
for the workplace as well as
social situations. Nathanson
sees gifting co-workers as an
expanding part of the gift busi-
ness, as work plays a more
prominent role in many peo-
ple's lives.
