soup or salad and bread basket.
A Mountain Grubb sector of
the menu includes Iowa chicken
corn pot pie, a Michigan Miner
stuffed with beef and vegetables
in a crusted flaky dough turnover
so popular it has been declared
the state food; shepherd's pie,
lumber Jack stew, Rose City
venison stew, buffalo burger, beef
burger and turkey burger ... All
are served with cole slaw.
Kids have a ball, too, eating at
Timber Creek ... and love the
homemade Sloppy Joes like mom
makes, or baby-back ribs, etc.
Timber Creek is open six days
... Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to
10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11
a.m. to 11 p.m.
There is always homemade
chili plus two homemade soups
of the day ... selections from
mushroom barley, potato fennel,
roasted tomato, wild mushroom

Northville's Timber
Creek is a young
owner's dream.

and kapusta (Polish cabbage
soup) from a recipe by Too Chez
executive chef Greg Upshur.
The servers at Timber Creek
Restaurant are so appreciative
of the kitchen staffthat they hap-
pily gives the cooks part of their
gratuities.
How many places do you know
of where the waitpersons do this?
... Giving busboys a share is com-
mon, but the cooks?
There's plenty of parking in
front of the large, spotlessly clean
restaurant ... Some folks say that
clean restrooms are somewhat
indicative of an eating estab-
lishment's tidiness ... If this is so,
Timber Creek gets a gold star.
But for good, wholesome,
home-cooked food at reasonable
prices, it is even harder to beat.
DELI UNIQUE No. 3 at

than the 40,000 wine glasses,
30,000 plates, 30,000 forks and
1,500 Mardi Gras masks for
guests and employees that are
the usual quantities needed to
put on the affair will be used.
The second annual Mardi
Gras themed MCFWE, 6:30 p.m.
to 10 p.m. Feb. 11, will have tast-
ings from about 25 good restau-

and the Back Street Horns ...

sion and $125 patrons ... Call
Mac & Ray's, (810) 463-9660,
Ext. 427.
WORD IS THAT Dorothy
Joseph, widow of the late Chuck
Joseph, has received a liquor li-
cense to open a restaurant in
Ferndale ... Also Tom Brandel
and his Tom's Oyster Bar ... Af-
ter Chuck passed on, Dorothy
ran Chuck Joseph's Place For
Steaks on the corner of 12 Mile
and Coolidge before selling it to
Kevin O'Mara.
HAVING SIX of the eight cer-
tified master chefs in Michigan
(there are only 67 in the entire
country) together at the same
time is quite an attraction.
It's the CMC Benefit Dinner
by the Ritz-Carlton, Dearborn,
and Certified Master Chef Schol-
arship Fund, Friday, Jan. 24, in
the Restaurant at the local Ritz.
Ed Janos, CMC and chef de
cuisine at the Ritz, will join Jeff
Gabriel, CMC; Leopold Schaeli,

Yagoda, son of Marvin's Mar-
velous Mechanical Museum own-
er Marvin Yagoda ... It is open
Wednesdays through Saturdays,
8 p.m. to 2 a.m., with exotic
drinks and DJ music for listen-
ing and dancing. ,
IT'S JUST a little place ...
only a couple of tables at Pizza
Bob's ... which Dental Doc Mark
Birnholtz raves about and where
he recently took root canal spe-
cialist Dr. John Cohen while both
attended a lecture in Ann Arbor.
SETTING THE Record
Straight Dept. ... Jan. 23 is Trib-
ute Restaurant's 10-month an-
niversary ... March 23 marks a
year ... The relationship of Bar-
ton Charlip, owner of the new
Canfield's on Woodward (former
Stewart's) works like this ... He
is the grandson of the late Mey-
er Charlip and the grandnephew
of the late Charlie Charlip ... No
doubt that Eliot is his dad.
DATE THIS YEAR is April
17 when Michigan's top chefs
and restaurateurs band togeth-
