tibiotics in their fight against bac-
/- Dteria.
But her master of science de-
gree and expertise didn't guaran-
tee her a job. "One administrator
after another," she recalls, "would
tell me that the position I was ap-
plying for had already been filled,
when it really hadn't — as I usu-
ally found out later."
But her luck changed when she
sought a position with Professor
--, Stanley Levine, then head of the
Pediatric Research Laboratory at
Rehovot's Kaplan Hospital. She
wound up working in his lab for
13 years, during which time she
did pioneering research on inter-
feron, a protein that warns cells
of imminent viral attack.
This work won her a large
grant from the German-Israeli
BMFT-NCRD Foundation. The
grant has been renewed many
times and is still in effect today.
Just recently she happened to
meet a key member of the foun-
dation's grants committee. "I nev-
er realized you were so small," he
told her frankly.
Never at a loss for words, she
replied with a smile: "I guess Fm
lucky that grant application forms
don't ask for your height."
\---) Taking a leave of absence from
the hospital, Talia went on to earn
a Ph.D. at the Weizmann Insti-
tute of Science.
She returned to Kaplan's Pe-
diatric Research Laboratory,
which, since Professor Levine's
death, she has headed. In addi-
tion, she is a lecturer at the He-
brew University-Hadassah School
of Medicine.
No less important to Dr. Hahn
than her professional career is her
work on behalf of the handi-
capped. While her efforts to set up
an Israeli equivalent of the "Lit-
tle People of America" group were
only partially successful, she has
done a great deal for Milbat (a
company that procures special de-
vices for the handicapped). Most
recently, she played a key role in
establishing a gynecological cli.n-
ic for physically and mentally
handicapped women at the
Maayanei Hayeshua Hospital in
B'nei Brak.
This demanded a major public
campaign because the medical es-
tablishment at first refused to ac-
knowledge the need. But Talia's
appearances on talk shows and
the strong support she obtained
from two women in the Knesset
— Communist Tamar Gozansky
and Likud representative Naomi
Blumenthal — won the day. Now
Talia is doing her best to raise
more money for the facility.
While serious about both her
science and her public service ac-
tivities, Talia never loses her
sense of humor. She recently be-
gan an address to a major inter-
national conference by asking,
"Who knows the definition of a mi-
crobiologist?" Her answer: "It's a
very small biologist." El
