r
I experienced the same dual-
ity a couple of evenings later, at
a surprise party for a friend of
ours who had just turned 60.
The food was marvelous and the
company no less so. But what I
found most interesting were the
reminiscences of the guest of
honor and her older brother, now
a leading television personality.
They told how their family
had escaped from Nazi Germany
at the very last minute and sub-
sequently, step by painful step,
had rebuilt their lives in Israel.
Nothing particularly unusu-
al about that kind of story. In-
deed, most Israelis with
European relatives are Holo-
caust survivors or the offspring
of survivors. But it is neverthe-
less heartwarming to hear, once
again, what they accomplished.
Less heartwarming was a
conversation I had that evening
with another guest, a former
high-ranking Israeli Air Force
officer who is now a central fig-
ure in the computer industry. He
expressed the fear that should
the peace process fail, there
might well be a nuclear war in
the Middle East.
The conversation didn't last
very long and we were soon back
to enjoying the birthday cele-
brations. For as happens so of-
ten in Israel, we simply
"switched stations." El
Keeping Ross As
Envoy Is Good Idea
JAMES D. BESSER
WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT
Almost unnoticed in the steady
flow of stories on the Hebron ne-
gotiations ("Hebron Deal Immi-
nent" may be the most
overworked headline of the
decade) was this story: Dennis
Ross, the special U.S. envoy to the
Mideast talks and the man who
kept negotiators at the table when
nobody seemed interested in a
deal, will keep his job in Clinton
II.
/—'
That decision signals the ad-
ministration's continuing com-
mitment to an incremental,
flexible approach to the negotia-
tions based on the long-term in-
terests of the participants, not
America's short-term needs.
Since the first Madrid peace
talks in 1991, Mr. Ross has been
a favorite target of both ends of
the Jewish political spectrum.
Even centrists agree that he and
his boss, Secretary of State War-
ren Christopher, spent too much
time pandering to Syrian Presi-
dent Hafez al-Assad; there have
been times when Mr. Ross' pa-
tience has been a liability in a re-
gion filled with ticking time
bombs.
