The First
Jewish President

'684'

LAURIE STIEBER

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Colin Powell's godson is a ninth-
grader at Westminster, my
daughter Alexandra's school. The
ex-general and former non-can-
didate was visiting him in At-
lanta and, on the spur of the
moment, offered to speak at the
school assembly.
Alexandra told us that one of
the students asked Colin Powell
if he planned to run for president
in the future. He might. It lead
to our family discussion that
evening about the historical sig-
nificance of a first African-Amer-
ican president. And that led to
the further speculation about a
Jewish president. Jarrett,
Alexandra's 7-year-old brother,
made a masterful contribution.
"Yeah," he said, "we need anoth-
er Jewish president."
"Another one?" I asked.
"Well ..." said Jarrett, the his-
torian, "we haven't had one since
Abraham Lincoln."
That reminds me of a joke I re-
cently heard about a man who be-
came the first Jewish president.
Jarrett and Alexandra didn't get
it, but they will someday.

Wasn't
Abe Lincoln
Jewish?

The first Jewish president has
been elected and, as you can
imagine, it's a media frenzy. The
president calls his mother in
Florida.
"Ma," he says, "we did it! I
want you to come to Washing-
ton for the inaugural ball."
"Who wants to shlep to the
snow?" she says. "And who has
the money to give the airlines?"
"Ma, I'm the president. I'll
send a military plane to pick you
up."
"I have nothing to wear but
an old shmatte."
"Ma, the best designers in the
world will make you gowns to
choose from."
"All right. I'll shlep in the bit-
ter cold," she says.
It's the inaugural evening and
the first Jewish president rais-
es his right hand to thunderous
applause. All eyes turn to the
president's mother, who is sit-
ting at her table, as he blows her
a kiss. With pride beyond all de-
scription, she turns to the sena-
tor seated beside her and says,
"See that man up there raising
his right hand? His brother," she
beams, "is a doctor." ❑
