tions, as well as "the best cous-
cous in France" — not to mention
the patronage of President Bill

— and a large, prosperous and
powerful one by the ninth cen-
tury, according to historians of
the medieval period. Such was
their status at that time, that
Jews were permitted to own
slaves and hire Christian work-
ers in their homes and in the var-
ious agricultural and commercial
enterprises they operated.
The kosher wines they pro-
duced were also popular among
non-Jewish customers, who also
patronized kosher butchers —
and even attended Sabbath ser-
vices, declaring that they pre-
ferred the sermons of the rabbis
to those of their own priests.
Two "must-see" museums, one
in a nearby village and one in
Lyon itself, recall the years be-
tween 1940, when the Germans
invaded the country, and the end
of World War II, when they were
finally driven out.
No guide book, not even Ben
Frank's newly-revised France for
the Jewish Traveler, includes
mention of one of the most mov-

Clinton, who stopped in briefly
on a recent visit to Lyon — high-
light the Tunisian-born
Chouraquis' claim to culinary
recognition.
We had dinner there, and ate
at several other excellent kosher
restaurants as well, in the course
of a three-day tour of the city that
encompassed both places of spe-
cial Jewish interest and the sites
and splendors of Lyon's rich me-
dieval past.
There are no surviving traces
of the first Jewish settlement, but
it is known that there was a
small Jewish community in Lyon
as early as the second century CE

ing of all the country's Holocaust
memorials — the Izieu Children's
Home. It is well worth the hour's
drive through the rolling foothills
of the Alps to Izieu and the mod-
est farmhouse overlooking the
Rhone River in which 44 French
children spent the final year of
their lives.
Drawings, letters the children
had written and photographs of
every one of the 44 who were
seized are on exhibit; their trav-
els are traced from their arrival
in France during the interwar pe-
riod until their eventual depor-
tation to Auschwitz. Additionally,
