We had dinner there, and ate at several other excellent kosher restaurants as well, in the course of a three-day tour of the city that encompassed both places of spe- cial Jewish interest and the sites and splendors of Lyon's rich me- dieval past. There are no surviving traces of the first Jewish settlement, but it is known that there was a small Jewish community in Lyon as early as the second century CE ing of all the country's Holocaust memorials — the Izieu Children's Home. It is well worth the hour's drive through the rolling foothills of the Alps to Izieu and the mod- est farmhouse overlooking the Rhone River in which 44 French children spent the final year of their lives. Drawings, letters the children had written and photographs of every one of the 44 who were seized are on exhibit; their trav- els are traced from their arrival in France during the interwar pe- riod until their eventual depor- tation to Auschwitz.
