others in similar situations.
The couple also has left the
Orthodox Jewish community.
Jeffrey Kaufman, who is ac-
tive in local politics, and his wife
Lily Kaufman said in an inter-
view that they both had been
married before and had ended
those marriages in civil divorces.
But Lily Kaufman had to wait
eight years before her previous
husband would grant her a
"get," or a Jewish divorce.
When she finally received the
get, she said, she was six weeks
pregnant with Jeffrey Kauf-
man's child.
According to Jewish law, the
Kaufmans' son, who is now 11,
was conceived in an adulterous
relationship and is a "mamzer."
Jewish law dictates that he
can only marry another "mamz-
er" or a convert. In addition, the
stigma is passed on to future
generations.
Non-Orthodox movements
have abolished the categoriza-
tion, calling it unjust.
However, the Kaufmans want
their son to feel at home with-
in the Orthodox community
should he decide to join it some-
day.
"A person shouldn't be be-
holden to these antiquated rul-
ings," Jeffrey Kaufman said,
adding, "The situation occurred
when Lily was 39 and I was in
my early 40s, without a child of
my own. At that age, you don't
wait around. No child could have
been more wanted."
Lily Kaufman said the orga-
nization she was setting up
would help families "tainted" by
this aspect of Jewish law.

Hungary Opens
Shopping Mall
Budapest (JTA) — Hungary's
newest and largest shopping
mall, funded by Israeli and Hun-
garian investors, was inaugu-
rated in Budapest by the
Hungarian prime minister.
Premier Gyula Horn said that
foreign investment in Hungary
is essential as the country moves
away from communism and to-
ward capitalism.
_ Israeli firms, including the
Ofer Brothers and Control Cen-
ters, invested a total of $63 mil-
lion in the project.
A delegation of 160 Israelis
were present for the mall's open-
ing.
"Hungary wants to offer a se-
cure and stable economic envi-
ronment for foreign investors,"
Mr. Horn said.
Israelis plan to invest in sev-
en additional malls in Hungary.
One of them is to be built in
the eastern Hungarian town of
Debrecen, where Israeli compa-
nies have been the target of anti-
Semitic activity, an official there
said.
