Moscow (JTA) — A Russian
Jewish leader has been award-
ed France's Legion of Honor in
recognition of his contribution to
culture and the media.
Vladimir Gusinsky, 43, a busi-
nessman and founder of the
Russian Jewish Congress, re-
ceived the award at a Paris cer-
emony.
Mr. Gusinsky is the third
Russian to receive the honor.
Mstislav Rostropovich, a cellist
and conductor, and Alexandr
Solzhenitsyn, the Nobel Prize-
winning author, are also recipi-
ents.
The Legion of Honor was cre-
ated in 1802 by Napoleon for
recognition of distinguished mil-
itary or civil service.

Bank Program
Raises Funds

New York (JTA) — The broker-
age subsidiary of a New York
bank has announced a new pro-
gram to raise funds for B'nai
B'rith.
"We have a history with B'nai
B'rith here in the New York met-
ropolitan area and we know the
causes it supports well," said
David Totaro, Dime Savings
Bank of New York executive vice
president and chief marketing
officer.
Anyone who buys or sells
stocks through Dime Securities
of New York, the bank's broker-
age subsidiary, can ask that 10
percent of the gross commissions
they pay on such transactions be
donated to B'nai B'rith.
On average, the commission
is about $75, Totaro said.
The Jewish charitable orga-
nization was chosen to partici-
pate in the bank's "Give a Dime"
fund-raising program because it
fit the bank's criteria for a "na-
tional organization with a strong
and loyal following, definite caus-
es and a reputation for manag-
ing the funds it raises well."
The program began in Sep-
tember with the American Red
Cross of Greater New York.
Although the program is tar-
geted to B'nai B'rith members in
New York, New Jersey and Fair-
field County, Conn., if a member
hears about the program in an-
other state and makes a trans-
action, the donation will be sent
to the local B'nai B'rith chapter.
