Avraham Burg's maternal grand-
father, Ya'acov Slonim, was the
Chief Ashkenazi rabbi of Hebron
-) until August 1929. That month,
his community of 700 souls, and
a more than 3,000 year Jewish
presence in the city, was driven
out by an Arab mob. By the end,
67 Jews had been butchered and
another 60 wounded.
Rabbi Slonim was the sixth
consecutive generation of the fam-
ily to have lived in the City of the
Patriarchs, the burial place of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, for
nearly 200 years. One half of Mr.
Burg's family, including the rab-
bi and Mr. Burg's mother, then

Seven years later, at the age of
57, the rabbi died in Jersualem.
"Here lies a man who was broken
by the destruction of Hebron,"
read his tombstone.
Today, that revered religious
leader's grandson, an observant
Jew, is the charismatic chairman
of the Jewish Agency and a dovish
Labor politician. When he visits
his grandfather's grave, he pon-
ders the city where Jews again
fear for their future.
He recalls the story of how Rab-
bi Slonim rented an apartment
from Alm Shakker. In his old age,
Abu Shakker went to Turkey and
brought back a new young wife,
comely, fair and plump. She bore
him two sons.
One day the elder son fell ill.
The doctors gave up. They told the
grieving parents he was going to
die during the night. Rabbi Slonim
sat by his bedside, praying and
reciting psalms. Next morning,
the fever abated and the boy re-
covered. The mother never forgot
this "Jewish miracle."
