Safe Shopping,
Common Sense

Here are some tips for safe, com-
fortable shopping:
• Protect your money. Never
carry large sums of money when
you shop. Men should keep wal-
lets in an inside pocket; hip pock-
ets are vulnerable to pickpockets.
For women, zippered waist fan-
ny packs provide more security
than open shoulder bags. Wear-
ing the pack under a loose
sweater, shirt or jacket makes it
even safer.
• Check you body language.
What you do, such as patting a
pocket, tells pickpockets where
the money is.
• Watch your credit cards.
Never loan your credit card.
Check to make sure you get the
proper credit card back after each
transaction.
• Count your packages. Do
this each time you stop in a store,
restroom or restaurant. Then
count them again before you
leave. Let the little ones help.
They love to count, and it will help
instill safe shopping habits.
• Plan ahead. Before you begin
shopping, set a meeting place for
you and your shopping compan-
ions to regroup if you become sep-
arated.
• Educate your children. Tell
them the importance of staying
close to you at all times. If they
are old enough, arrange a place
to meet should you become sepa-
rated. Teach younger children to
stay inside the shopping center
and seek a uniformed security of-
ficer.

• Be aware of your sur-
roundings. When you park, pay
attention to parking lot signs that
identify your location and stores
that flank your entrance. If you
tend to forget, write them down.
Observe those around you. It's not
only a safety precaution, but peo-
ple-watching can be fun.
• Store packages out of sight.
Lock any packages or coats in the
trunk of your car, out of tempta-
tions's sight. Never leave a purse
or wallet in your car.
• Always lock you car. It's a
good idea to lock up when you're
on the road, too.
• Park in areas where you feel
comfortable. Look for well-lit ar-
eas with lots of foot traffic. Pa-
tronize shopping centers that
assign trained, uniformed pro-
fessionals to all parking lots. That
way, you know someone is near-
by to help should you discover a
dead battery, flat tire — or your
