Honor For
Yiddish
The first street in the United
States to be named for Yiddish
author Sholom Aleichem was
dedicated in New York in Sep-
tember.
East 33rd Street, between
Park and Madison avenues, was
renamed Sholom Aleichem
Place. The project was pushed
by the Sholom Aleichem Memo-
rial Foundation, the Forward
Association, and Workmen's
Circle/Arbeter Ring.
Sidney Gluck, president of
the Sholom Aleichem Founda-
tion, started the project after
finding that Israel had Sholom
Aleichem streets in 18 cities.
