B'nai B'rith
Housing Project

New York (JTA) — B'nai B'rith
has begun construction of its first
federally subsidized apartment
building for low-income senior
citizens in California.
Los Angeles City Council Pres-
ident John Ferraro joined B'nai
B'rith executives and members,
officials from the U.S. Depart-
ment of Housing and Urban De-
velopment and the Los Angeles
Community Redevelopment
Agency to break ground for the
North Hollywood building.
The B'nai B'rith Golden Years
Senior Apartments, a 91-unit,
non-denominational building, is
scheduled for completion next
year. "The cadre of B'nai B'rith
) volunteers have been instru-
mental
in making this program a re-
ality," said Mark Olshan, direc-
tor of senior housing and services
for B'nai B'rith.
Construction also began re-
cently on a federally subsidized
housing unit sponsored by B'nai
B'rith in Evensham Township,
N.J.
) Five applications for other

are now pending with HUD.
B'nai B'rith, the largest na-

seniors, began the non-sectari-

Women Of Wall
Are Attacked

Jerusalem (JTA) — Fervently Or-
thodox men in Israel threw chairs
and shouted curses at a group of
women who were trying to pray at
the Western Wall to mark the be-
ginning of the Jewish month of
Kislev.
The attack was prompted when
the men took offense that some of
the women in the group wore re-
ligious skullcaps and prayer
shawls.
The incident came as the High
Court of Justice is considering a
petition from the group, Women
of the Wall, to pray at the Kotel.
Last month, the court instruct-
ed the government to find appro-
priate prayer arrangements for
the group, a cross-section of Or-
thodox and non-Orthodox women
who have been mounting a legal
battle over the matter for years.
In an unprecedented move, the
court also instructed the Religious
Affairs Ministry to pay the legal
expenses of the petitioners.
