Medical schools today need to
prepare their students to be good
generalists, added Dr. Sokol. "In
traditional allopathic programs,
we may not have put a high val-
ue on that. Now, we have the fac-
ulty and are pushing to provide
a broad range of experiences for
the students," he said.
Even as the two groups begin
to work together in many areas,
there are still strong advocates for
separate medical schools. Dr.
Howard Sobel believes osteopaths
offer more than people realize.
"Some people feel we're so close
together (with M.D.$) that we
shouldn't be separate. I feel we
should be separate," he said.
Allopathic programs lack a
holistic approach as an integral
part of diagnosis and treatment,
he noted. "But most of the re-
search and books are done by
M.D.s," Dr. Sobel said. 'They're
great in those areas."
"Personally, I don't see a dif-
ference, although osteopaths feel
they bring something different to
the table. Michigan State Uni-
versity is the best osteopathic
school in the country and they

Dr. Sokol, who has worked with
osteopaths for nearly 30 years.
Michigan State also has an M.D.
program.
Dr. Randall Bickle, 41, is an
osteopathic family practitioner
who practices in Canton and
Livonia with five other col-
leagues, all osteopaths.
Dr. Bickle spends his time see-
ing patients in his office. If a pa-
tient needs to be hospitalized, he 0
refers them to a specialist. He
also works closely with medical
students, interns and residents,
exposing them to the challenges
of office-based medicine.
Before medical school, Dr.
Bickle was enrolled in law school.
In his second year, he realized he
still wanted to become a physi-
cian and started looking into the
osteopathic programs. He dis-
covered that he liked their phi-
losophy and applied. Dr. Bickle
graduated from New York Col-

1984, and received a law degree
from St. Louis University School
of Law at the same time.
Dr. Bickle returned to Detroit
