. .. "Italian cuisine is in-
creasingly popular in the De-
troit metropolitan area.
"Ernesto's on Plymouth Road
in Plymouth is an Italian country
inn, where the food is abundant
and memorable. Veal, pasta and
chicken are fine and seafood in
a sherry cream sauce is a palate
pleaser.
'Waiters in long aprons attend
to your dining needs at Cafe
Oliverio on Middlebelt in Farm-
ington Hills. This bustling bistro
has a friendly family atmosphere
and some fine Italian cuisine. But
have you ever heard of an Italian
restaurant that doesn't serve
minestrone soup regularly?
"Cafe Cortina on 10 Mile in
Farmington Hills gets an 'A' for
atmosphere. The menu features
garden fresh ingredients, freshly
baked bread and many home-
made pasta and veal selections.
The tomato-based sauces are
highly recommended.
"Paparazzi Ristorante on
Orchard Lake Road in West
Bloomfield is an ultra-trendy and
friendly spot which features
hearty Italian minestrone, egg-
plant, spinach to/tenni in a pesto
sauce and other flavorful menu
items.
"Picano's on Rochester Road
in Troy isn't too bad a bet, from
the eggplant Parmigiana appe-
tizer to the pasta.
"You can't talk about Italian
restaurants without mentioning
Mario's on Second, founded in
1948 and a link to our past. The
atmosphere is quietly elegant and
dining is an experience. Antipas-
to salad and thick, spicy mine-
strone are among the best we've
savored. You can't go wrong or-
dering any item from Mario's
large repertoire of veal dishes.
But we found the spaghetti and
sauce a disappointing far cry from
what it used to be.
"Lelli's I'm on Woodward is
another grand old standby, serv-
ing fine Italian food for 50 years.
The red sauce, minestrone, veal
and steak are a tad above the
rest.
"Roma Cafe on Riopelle de-
serves to be on everyone's dining
list. The traditional Italian food
in Detroit's oldest Italian restau-
rant is fresh and tangy. Among
favorite dishes are veal Parmi-
giana and baked cannelloni.
"rfrattoria Bruschetta in the
Hotel Baronette in Novi is a new-
er kid on the block, but it is
among our favorites. The compli-
mentary appetizer plate, garlicky mushroom bisque is to die for and
Caesar salad, eggplant lasagna so is the warm sourdough bread.

"Norman's Eton Street Sta-

revisited. We enjoyed the potato-
encrusted whitefish in this Birm-

Eton.

order the deli shrimp salad at Al-

Birmingham. If you're especially
hungry, add a cup of clam chow-
der or other hearty soup along
with the salad.
