tion to those areas of the body that
most frequently bear the strain of
added weight.
"I get a lot of requests for low-
er back and feet," Mrs. Garafalo
said She uses slow and gentle
strokes, then deeper, relaxing mo-
tions with the palm of the hand.
The massage usually is done
with the woman lying on her side,
snugly surrounded by pillows,
since those in the latter stages of
pregnancy hardly will feel com-
fortable on their stomachs. Mas-
sage therapists at Tamara's prefer
a lavender oil for the procedure.
The lotion is not greasy, will not
stain clothes; and bears an aroma
that leaves clients pleasantly re-
laxed.
In addition to the much-need-
ed back and foot treatment, Mrs.
Garafalo noted that massage also
can be helpful for sinus head-
aches. During pregnancy, in-
creased hormone levels often
result in a softening and thicken-
ing of the mucus membranes,
which means clogged nasal pas-
sages and other sinus problems.
Opinion is split when it comes
to the stomach. Some women pre-
fer not to be touched there at all;
others enjoy a light stroking and
have told Mrs. Garafalo their un-
born infant apparently does as
well.
"They've said it feels like their
baby is happy," Mrs. Garafalo
said.
Providing a woman is in good
physical health, massage is safe
throughout her pregnancy —
some wish it would go well be-
yond. Mrs. Garafalo has heard
numerous requests, "If only you
could come in with me for labor."
Massage generally runs any-
where from $40 to $60 an hour,
not including the tip. Less expen-
sive alternatives exist, including
opportunities, such as a manicure
or pedicure, at some of the nicer
spas in town. Mrs. Garafalo also
recommends a paraffin-wax treat-
ment. The warm wax is applied
directly to the hands and/or feet,
then topped with mittens and fi-
nally peeled off.
"It does not hurt at all," Mrs.
Garafalo insisted, "and it leaves
the skin feeling very soft."
One word of caution: Women
in any stage of pregnancy should
not visit the jacuzzi, sauna or
heated tub, or have hot blankets
placed on their stomachs. Expos-
ing the fetus to extremely high
temperatures has, in some cases,
been shown to cause birth defects.
Tamara's also has massages for
men suffering sympathetic back
